BILLY BRAGG - Must I Paint A Picture / The Essential [2003 . Cooking Vinyl: COOKCD266 (2CD) / COOKCD266X (3CD)] Als Doppel- (bzw. Tripel-) Album hat Cooking Vinyl nun die bislang umfassendste Werkschau von Billy Bragg veröffentlicht. Den Startschuss bildet das mit Sicherheit bekannteste Lied des britischen Folkbarden "A New England", ursprünglich 1983 auf seinem Solodebut "Life's A Riot With Spy Vs. Spy" veröffentlicht. Chronologisch angeordnet malt "Must I Paint A Picture" tatsächlich ein gutes Bild des politischen Poeten, der in den 1980er Jahren zu den bekanntesten Protestsängern gegen die konservative Regierung in UK zählte. Herausragend bis heute ist in jedem Fall seine Verbeugung vor den Four Tops "Levi Stubbs Tears"! Leider fehlt mit dem Beatles-Cover "She's Leaving Home" sein einziger #1-Hit in UK (auch wenn dieser nur als AA-Seite von Wet Wet Wets "With A Little Help From My Friends" veröffentlicht wurde). Die zweite Disc startet 1991 mit seinem Erfolgsalbum "Don't Try This At Home". Billy Bragg präsentiert sich nach wie vor als scharfzüngiger Kritiker - musikalisch hingegen ist er deutlich schwächer, als in seinen Anfangstagen. Äußerst positiv auch, dass drei Stücke aus der Kollaboration mit Wilco auf der Zusammenstellung nicht fehlen (vor allem das wunderschöne "Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key"). "Must I Paint A Picture" ist - ganz Billy Bragg - eine sehr gute Reise durch sein musikalisches Schaffen und gleichzeitig durch zwei Jahrzehnte (britischer) Politik. Dass natürlich ebenso tolle Songs fehlen, liegt in der Natur der Sache. Eine schöne und durchaus empfehlenswerte Compilation.
